Lighter Patent.JPG - LIGHTER PATENT - Shawinigan issued the patented lighter with their name as a promotional item. The lighter patent was awarded to Charles C. Smith as No. 2,018,094 on Oct. 22, 1935 and assigned to The Matchless Co. in Cleveland. The patent was filed on July 9, 1934. The lighter was issued as a promotional item by Shawinigan sometime in late 1934 or mid-1935 since it's marked pat. pend. While an interesting design, the process of lighting a flaming striker near the open fuel filled hole on top could burn a few fingers. Little information about The Matchless Co was found perhaps because too many fingers got burned.
